Since 2022, we’ve been producing organic functional mushroom extracts for both the public and a growing number of UK wellness brands. As we develop, we’re expanding into the food and drinks industries too – collaborating with makers who want to bring high-quality mushroom extracts into their products. We’re a small team of five, deeply committed to the craft. Every step – from foraging and cultivation, to extraction, bottling, and labelling – happens in-house, guided by care, curiosity, and a love for fungi as medicine. Our farm is a working space but also a community hub, and we love showing people what we do. If you’re ever nearby in South Wales, or fancy a weekend away, come for a visit and we’ll happily walk you through the process.
At The Fungi Folks, three principles guide every decision we make: science, transparency, and sustainability.

Science

Our work begins in the lab. Ben, our founder and a trained geneticist, brings a research-led approach to cultivation and extraction – from developing promising strains to refining our growing conditions and extraction processes.

We routinely test our extracts for contaminants and bioactive content, ensuring they meet our internal standards as industry testing practices continue to mature. Our goal is simple: products whose quality can always be demonstrated, not guessed at.

Transparency

We cultivate, extract, blend, and bottle everything ourselves in South Wales. This direct, hands-on approach allows us to maintain consistency, understand every step of our production, and share that process openly with the people and brands we supply.

In a young and fast-growing sector, clarity builds trust. Traceability, clean inputs, and honest communication are fundamental to our work – and to the long-term health of the UK functional mushroom space.

Sustainability

The farm began with a regenerative mindset, and we still operate with that same care for land and material. We use locally sourced timber by-products, draw water from naturally filtered Welsh aquifers, and grow native strains where possible to support biodiversity. We have native Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Maitake, and Oysters, and some fresh Cordyceps in the lab for experimentation. Waste streams are treated as resources — re-used in cultivation, composted, or transformed into new material by artists and makers within our community. Growth and ecology move together here, and we work to keep that balance as we scale.

Meet The Team

Ben Gibson

Ben is the founder and head grower at The Fungi Folks farm. Having fallen deeper and deeper down the Fungal rabbit hole over the past few years, he graduated from his bedroom laboratory and set up the farm in South Wales in 2022, with the help of Dewi. The realisation that you can grow mushrooms at home, and make potent medicinal extractions from them was what first attracted him into the world of mushroom cultivation. Through his work with The Fungi Folks, he is committed to sharing his enthusiasm for this diverse Kingdom of life, and hopes to invite people into the fantastical world of Fungi, encouraging engagement with, and connection to these beautiful and mysterious organisms.

Kit Ondaatje Rolls

Kit is The Fungi Folks’ Head of Marketing and Collaborations. With a background in Biodesign and nine years of experience in the mushroom world, she brings energy, market insight, and a passion for native fungi. Kit loves incorporating mushrooms into products that promote health and happiness, and she’ll be helping you bring your functional mushroom products to life.

Sam Bowser

Sam is Production Manager on the farm, overseeing everything from prepping and inoculating substrate to harvesting the fresh mushrooms used in our extracts. He is also Director of Composts, helping to squeeze more life from our substrate once the mushrooms are cropped. He began his career in jewellery, working in CAD design and production for a decade before studying agroecology and training across the landwork sector, leading him to his role at The Fungi Folks.

Dewi James

Resident elder of the Fungi Folks team and a life-long explorer of nature, Dewi brings a wealth of experience to the table. In his role, he supports the production team, lending not only a helping hand but also offering valuable and sound words of advice

David Gibson

As the Fungi Folks' CTO, Dave uses his technical knowledge and experience to build and develop the website. He loves to visit the farm to understand more about the fascinating work that goes on there and to help out with a bit of graft where he can.
