Known in ancient times as the 10,000 years mushroom, or the mushroom of immortality, and perhaps the most revered “herb” in the Chinese medicinal canon. The three characters for the Chinese name for Reishi – Ling zhi – together mean “shaman”, “praying for”, and “rain”.
Where to start…. Reishi is a powerful mushroom, with a diverse biochemistry, making it difficult to summarise its myriad benefits! It has been implicated in managing stress (adaptogenic), improving sleep, and modulating the immune system. Immune system “modulation” refers to the ability of Reishi (and other medicinal mushrooms) to both stimulate and supress the immune system in a responsive way. In this way, Reishi can bolster the immune system whilst also decreasing inflammation that is often caused by an overactive immune response.
In traditional Eastern systems of medicine, it has been used for liver and kidney conditions, lung ailments, nerve pain, hypertension, and insomnia to name but a few. Its use dates back at least 4 millennia, and is one of the better studied medicinal mushrooms.
Maitake mushrooms (Grifola frondosa), also known as the “dancing mushroom,” have been treasured in traditional Japanese and Chinese medicine for centuries. They were historically valued for their ability to strengthen vitality and resilience, especially during times of physical or emotional stress. Modern herbalists continue to use maitake for its powerful adaptogenic properties—helping the body maintain balance and recover from the effects of fatigue, illness, or hormonal change.
In tincture form, maitake offers a concentrated, easily absorbed way to benefit from its rich array of beta-glucans, antioxidants, and nutrients. These natural compounds are known to support immune function, regulate blood sugar levels, and promote healthy metabolism. Because the tincture delivers active compounds directly into the bloodstream, it provides a fast and effective way to harness the mushroom’s natural support for energy and immune strength.
For women navigating menopause, maitake can be particularly beneficial. Its balancing effects on hormones and blood sugar may help reduce mood swings, fatigue, and cravings, while its adaptogenic properties support emotional stability and resilience. Combined with other functional mushrooms like Reishi and Lion’s Mane, maitake tincture becomes part of a holistic approach to maintaining calm, energy, and overall wellbeing through life’s natural transitions.
The Japanese name for Lion´s mane – yamabushitake – refers to the hermit Buddhist monks of Shugendo sect, whose ornamental garments are said to resemble the mushroom… It has been eaten and used medicinally in the East for centuries, and we are just beginning to understand its potential now in the West.
Much of the current interest around Lion´s mane is due to its effect on the brain and nervous system. Modern research has focused on its utility in cognitive function, support to mental clarity, concentration and productivity. Compounds unique to the Lions mane family known as hericenones and erinacenes have been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production. Hence it has been donned “brain food”! Interestingly, when the mushrooms are young, they are pink in colour and resemble little brains…
In traditional Eastern systems of medicine however, Lion´s mane was always used as a gut medicine – treating gastritis, gut cancers, gastric ulcers, general debility, etc. rather than for its cognitive benefit. As we continue to understand the intimate connection between the brain and gut, we realise that the traditional and modern approaches may not be so distinct!
So go ahead and get our Lions Mane medicinal tincture, made from Lion’s Mane grown here organically, at the farm.
