The practice dates back to 1100AD and a Japanese woodcutter by the name of Wu San Kwung, who is celebrated in festivals and temples to this day. Shiitake is a prized edible species, and is often overlooked in the West for its great medicinal value.
Studies have shown the benefit of Shiitake in immune function and cancer, skin and hair health, and the metabolic-endocrine system – cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. It has many compounds of medicinal interest – lentinan for example has been a licenced anti-cancer drug in Japan since the 1980s. AHCC is another compound which has been well studied for immune function and again is widely used in Japan in cancer therapy. Traditionally, shiitake was used to increase stamina and circulation and to treat diabetes, high blood cholesterol, immune deficiency, and arthritis. High in beta-glucans, and vitamin D due to its high ergosterol content – Our shiitake medicinal tincture, made from organic mushrooms grown on the farm, is a fantastic addition to the line-up of medicinal mushrooms. The Japanese name for Lion´s mane – yamabushitake – refers to the hermit Buddhist monks of Shugendo sect, whose ornamental garments are said to resemble the mushroom… It has been eaten and used medicinally in the East for centuries, and we are just beginning to understand its potential now in the West.
Much of the current interest around Lion´s mane is due to its effect on the brain and nervous system. Modern research has focused on its utility in cognitive function, support to mental clarity, concentration and productivity. Compounds unique to the Lions mane family known as hericenones and erinacenes have been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production. Hence it has been donned “brain food”! Interestingly, when the mushrooms are young, they are pink in colour and resemble little brains…
In traditional Eastern systems of medicine however, Lion´s mane was always used as a gut medicine – treating gastritis, gut cancers, gastric ulcers, general debility, etc. rather than for its cognitive benefit. As we continue to understand the intimate connection between the brain and gut, we realise that the traditional and modern approaches may not be so distinct!
So go ahead and get our Lions Mane medicinal tincture, made from Lion’s Mane grown here organically, at the farm.
The medicinal use of Cordyceps is thought to date back many centuries if not millennia. Tales are told of observant herdsmen on the high plains of Tibet noticing their yaks eating Cordyceps before the rutting season… and there began the long history of human consumption of Cordyceps.
Celebrated for its energizing attributes, research indicates that Cordyceps may alleviate fatigue, enhance athletic prowess, boost sexual vitality, and augment endurance. Further investigations have explored its promising potential as an anti-cancer agent, immune system modulator, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory remedy.
Here at The Fungi Folks we have been honing our cultivation of this amazing fungi. It is grown on organic substrates here at the farm and brings you the a great Corcyceps medicinal tincture to complete your set.
One of the best studied of all medicinal mushrooms – over 400 clinical studies have been published in Japan demonstrating immune benefit. In 1965, a chemical worker in the late stages of cancer, having been rejected from all treatments and clinics noticed his neighbour taking Turkey tail to cure himself of cancer. He took the remedy for several months and recovered. Upon returning to work, he urged his company to investigate, and ‘Krestin’ or ‘PSK’ – one of the first officially licenced mushroom-derived anti-cancer drugs was born.
Two compounds found in this mushroom (PSP and PSK) have been licenced anti-cancer drugs in Asia for decades, and strengthen the immune system. PSP has also been shown to have prebiotic activity – that is it supports the gut microbiota. Turkey tail has also been shown to be highly antiviral, beneficial for respiratory health, circulatory health, a powerful antioxidant, and much more.
